ENMAYÚSCULA.- Filmmakers from 63 countries submitted their films for consideration for the fifth edition of the International Film Festival of Panama, more than double the number received in 2015.

IFF Panama's open call succeeded in drawing 294 films for selection and screening at the 2016 edition. The Programming department received an additional 137 films via distributors and film-industry sales agents, bringing the total number of applications to 431.

This substantial increase over the 115 applications received last year highlights the International Film Festival of Panama's growing prestige in the regional and global festival circuits, while providing audiences the opportunity to enjoy diverse, high-quality cinema during the Festival.

This year, the country submitting the most films is Argentina with 45 titles, closely followed by Spain with 41. Among other top open-call submitters are: Mexico (19); Colombia (16); Portugal (15); United States (13); Panama (12); Brazil & Venezuela (11); Germany, Italy & Chile (6); and Iran, Costa Rica, Peru, & Canada (5).

"Naturally, it's highly pleasing to see the International Film Festival of Panama experience such a positive reception from the global film industry, especially so quickly – 2016 marks the young Festival's fifth edition," says Diana Sánchez, Artistic Director of IFF Panama.

The submitted films' origins are as varied as they are distant, arriving from countries around the world including: Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines, South Korea, Syria, India, China, Japan, Algeria, Israel, Croatia, Bulgaria, Austria, Iceland, Scotland, Macedonia, Estonia, and many others.
